There is extensive alcoholism in Ukraine and many of the police are corrupt. One American male I knew asked two policemen for directions and they beat and robbed him. If you go out in a group or with a male friend it is not a problem. Make SURE if you take a cab agree on the price BEFORE you get in or you'll be sure to get ripped (i.e., a cabbie took me to the train station for 7 dollars, the return cabbie (same distance and time) charged me $65)! I found the people a bit standoffish but once they understand your needs they go out of their way to help you. I love Ukraine, the people, and the food is awesome.
