If you're looking to boost your burn during your walks to lose weight faster, it might be time to amp up your walks with power intervals. I know it's a hard sell, but with a bit of mental gymnastics and careful planning you can change your attitude about the changing seasons so that you'll look forward to spending as much time outside during the cold months as you do during Canada's too short summer season. Consider what my dad once told me: There is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing," but before you get your wardrobe together, you need to wrap your mind around this concept.
It's not unusual for horses in the summer months to lose weight. The heat combined with pesky biting insects can run a horse down very quickly. Especially susceptible to the stress of heat and bugs are senior horses and those with very sensitive skins. Many Thoroughbreds have this problem. In addition to protection from the heat of the day, and the bites of the mosquitoes and other flies, horses that have problems keeping weight on in summer could benefit from extra feed, whether it's good-quality hay in the barn where it can relax and eat without fretting at the bugs, or a concentrate or supplement to help put on weight.

What does this mean in plain English? It means that our bodies have the wonderful ability to adapt to what's available. When we fast, we deplete much of the stored sugar (glycogen). Our muscles then become much more efficient at using fat for energy. This happens because muscle 'learns' how to use the fat as energy by increasing the amount of proteins that metabolize that fat. In other words, our muscles learn to burn fat, not sugar.
