A calorie deficit is the energy shortfall that results from using more energy than you absorb from food. Professor Jonathan Valabhji, NHS England's National Clinical Director for Obesity and Diabetes, said: Obesity is a significant and wide scale public health issue for all age groups and an issue the NHS as a whole is dedicated to tackling. The costs to the NHS of managing the diseases associated with obesity are huge so we need to invest in both people who are already overweight as well as educating the generations to come in the importance of avoiding becoming overweight or obese.

A study from the University of Alabama found emotional eaters—those who admitted eating in response to emotional stress—were thirteen times more likely to be overweight or obese. If you feel the urge to eat in response to stress, try chewing a piece of gum, chugging a glass of water, or walking around the block. Create an automatic response that doesn't involve food and you'll prevent yourself from overloading on calories.
